Ashtabula – Porter Huggins, age 96, passed away on June 25, 2024 after a brief stay at Carrington Park Nursing Home.
Born February 27, 1928, in Logan, Ohio, he was the son of Porter Corwin Huggins and Mary Grace Huggins. He was married to the late Patricia “Patty” L. Huggins which he married September 21, 1957. They were together for 53 years before her passing in 2011.
During the depression he, along with his siblings, now deceased, Harry Huggins and Thelma Powell, were in an orphanage for about 7 years. Saying it was the best time of his childhood where he was well fed, well dressed and well taken care of. He had fond memories of learning to raise farm animals and growing food for the table.
At 17 he wanted to join the Navy……at which time his mother had to sign for him to join. He served during WWII in the South Pacific Arena on an LST for exactly 1 year with an honorable discharge at the tail end of the war.
He enjoyed life and his family, raising four children; David (Colleen) Huggins of Florida, Kathy (Bruce) Hook of Geneva, Kevin (Lori) Huggins of Ashtabula and Scott Huggins of Akron. Seven grandchildren, Stacey (Norvell) Todd, Aaron Grey, Aaron (Amanda) Mullins, Sara (Matt) Hapach, Joseph Huggins, Paige and Spencer Huggins, and 8 great grandchildren; Olivia, Madeline, Reagan, Eli, Emery, Avery, Grayson and Hudson.
He was an avid golfer, tennis player, and in his younger days, basketball with all the boys from the “harbor”. He was also a church league basketball coach and referee.
Funeral service will be on Sunday June 30 at 4 P.M. in Guerriero 1550 West 19th St. Military Honors will be provided by the American Legion Honor Guard Team from Post 103 Ashtabula. Visitation will be on Sunday prior to the service from 2 to 4.
