Joseph "Radar" Ray
Joseph Anthony Ray, 79, passed away unexpectedly on January 17, 2026.
Joe was born in Ashtabula, Ohio on July 26, 1946 and graduated from St. John High School in 1964, where he earned his nickname “Radar” on the basketball court. After high school, he proudly served his country in the United States Army in Vietnam.
Joe worked for Conrail during his younger years, and then enjoyed 30 years as the beloved custodian at Mentor Schools, where he was affectionately known as Mr. Radar to the children at Fairfax Elementary.
Joe's hobbies included playing the drums in local bands, landscaping, golfing, making homemade wine, and spending time with his family. He was a devoted dad, never missed a game or activity, and worked tirelessly to send his kids to college.
Joe will be remembered for his ability to make everyone laugh uncontrollably with his quick wit and humorous comments.
In his later years, Joe’s purpose changed and his primary role was to help care for his wife. The notoriously funny man had a soft side behind the scenes, making sure Tina had everything she needed to be safe and comfortable.
Joe is survived by his loving wife, Tina, his daughter Lisa Barrickman (Josh), his son Mark (Amy), his sister Mary Lou Atzemis (Danny), and his 3 adored grandchildren, Ellie, Jack and Charlie Barrickman. Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Lucy Ray, his in-laws Gaetano and Antonietta DiLemme, and his nephew, Mark Atzemis.
To honor Joe’s wishes, the family will hold a private Funeral Mass in Brooklyn, Ohio. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to Saint John School in Ashtabula.
