Jean Marie (Candela) Meola

Jean Marie Meola (94) of Ashtabula passed on June 28, 2025 at the Saybrook Landing. Jean was a devoted wife, mother, and a beloved member of her community.

Born Aug. 9, 1930 in Ashtabula she was the daughter of Joseph “Jasper” and Rose (Ambrose) Candela.

Jean was a graduate of Ashtabula High School class of 1948 and attended the Ashtabula campus of Kent State University.

She married John Meola in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church on Aug.1, 1953.  After working at the Illuminating Company and Farmers National Bank Jean retired from the City of Ashtabula.

Mrs. Meola was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel and Mother of Sorrows Parishes before Our Lady of Peace Parish. She was also a member of Elks Ladies Association, Italian Sons and Daughters of America, former Grey Lady at ACMC, and was a volunteer for Hospice of the Western Reserve.

Jean loved to travel throughout the country and spending time with her children who were in Chicago, San Diego, Mentor, Ohio and Wisconsin. She was an avid card player and hosted many events at her home on Walnut Blvd. Most of all, she enjoyed sitting on her front porch, greeting neighbors and passersby, and watching the sunset over Lake Erie.

Survivors include her daughters Julie Ann Meola, Jeanine Marie Meola, Janice Rose (Darryl Howe) Meola, and her son Jonathan R. (Suzanne) Meola, sister Delores Peura, and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband John in 2003, sisters Tomasina Mauro, and Rose Gouhin.

Funeral service will be on Tuesday July 1 at Noon in Guerriero Funeral Home 1550 West 19th St. with burial to follow in St. Joseph Cemetery. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 10 to 12 at the funeral home.
