Dennis “R.” Johnson, age 78, passed away Thursday evening, February 15, 2018, after a battle with brain cancer.
He was born November 7, 1939 in Blevinsville, Kentucky, the son of David and Martha Johnson. He moved to Ashtabula in 1952 where he met his future wife, Lorraine whom he married on August 25, 1959. He worked for a few years at the Raser Tannery and then began working for the City of Ashtabula, ultimately becoming the Superintendent of Public Works, retiring in 1994. Dennis and Lorraine were amazing foster parents to over 50 children. During the 20 plus years of his retirement, “Uncle Denny” could be found around town doing what he enjoyed, giving the people he loved “a hard time.” Whether it was managing Lakeshore Lanes on the weekends, shooting pool around town or sitting on the porch drinking coffee, he never knew a stranger. He was someone who had his own special way of making everyone feel loved. Dennis enjoyed spending time with his longtime friend and neighbor, Lenwood McLendon. He was an avid bowler and golfer; achieving two 300 games and 2 holes-in-one over the years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved first wife, Lorraine, who passed away Aprill 22, 2011; a beloved daughter, Kathleen, who passed away March 15, 2006; two brothers, Bud Jr. and Hatler; a sister, Shelby-Jean; and two infant siblings, Robert and Glenda-Faye.
He is survived by his current wife, Joanne, whom he married on August 21, 2017; three daughters, Christina (Rick) Williams, Barbara (Curtis) Brewer, and Staci Johnson; three sons, David (Laurie) Johnson, Dennis (Jen) Johnson Jr., and Alex Johnson; daughters in law, Debbie Lewandowski and Laura Whittaker; a brother, Michael (Gloria) Johnson, two sisters, Patty (Frank) Cole and Maxine Hall; grandchildren, Jimmy, Cristy, Chad, David Jr., Deanna, Whitney, Tiffany, Trayvon, Shon, and Luie; and 12 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be Tuesday February 20 from 3-7 PM at the Guerriero Funeral Home 1550 West 19th St. Ashtabula. A Funeral Service will be held Wednesday February 21, 10 AM, officiated by Rev. Kenneth Roberts at the funeral home.
