August Phillip Butler (96) of Sao Paulo Brazil and formerly of Ashtabula passed away on Dec. 5, 2018 in Brazil.
He was born March 15, 2018 in Robison ILL. The son of August and Emma Butler. He lost his father at the age of 8 and was raised by his mother.
Phil joined the United States Coast Guard after Pearl Harbor , before going to war in the South Pacific he was stationed along the Great Lakes , including the Ashtabula Coast Guard Station during which time he met Margaret ( Marge) Vetter and after returning from overseas he married and had one son David.
Mr. Butler worked at various jobs in town, lived on the eastside of town and eventually worked for the East Ohio Gas Co. (today Dominion Gas) where he was well known in the region as “Phil Butler the Gas Man” , he retired and eventually moved to Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. After the passing of his wife Marge in 2013, he went to live with his son who has resided for the last 48 years in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
Survivors include his son David, grandchildren Deivian and Lenara , 4 great grandchildren Bernardo, Manuela , Joao , and Antonio.
Memorial Mass will be on Saturday Dec. 15, 2018 at 1:30 in Our Lady of Peace Parish , Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church with burial to follow in St. Joseph Cemetery. Military Honors will be provided by the American Legion Honor Guard Team from Post 103. Visitation will be from 12:30 to 1:30 at the Church on Saturday.
